Ernest Hemingway—a writer, a Nobel Prize winner, and to many people’s surprise, a resident of Cuba!

Having penned The Old Man and the Sea and A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway is revered and remembered for his literary influence on early 20^th Century writing. He actually wrote The Old Man and the Sea while living in Cuba, with the setting of the novel taking place in Cuba!

Hemingway moved to an area right outside Havana in 1940, spending his days fishing on his boat, Pilar, and immersing himself in the joys of island life. Most importantly, he carried on with writing while passing the time in Cuba. Continuing his passion for journalism, he also authored reports on World War II during this time.

His estate, named Finca Vigía, translates to “Lookout Farm” in English. In present day, it’s a house museum and serves as an important hub for tourism in Cuba. See the original typewriters that Hemingway used to compose his most important works. His treasured boat, Pilar, is also showcased! Arguably, the most exciting feature of this house tour is that you’ll get to see unpublished writings by the famous author.
