Every week GIL TRAVEL will choose a new destination, topic, and concept or travel related subject that we find interesting and want to share.

Jerusalem, Israel Jerusalem, Israel

Let's begin with one of GIL TRAVEL'S DESTINATIONS starting at The Beginning as well as The Top that would definitely be Jerusalem Surprisingly not internationally recognized as the CAPITAL of ISRAEL but I think it is The CAPITAL of the WORLD! One of the oldest cities on the planet and the largest in ISRAEL in both size and population, Jerusalem is the HOLIEST of CITIES to the three major Abrahamic Religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The oldest part of the city was settled in the 4th millennium BCE. Most important to the Jewish Tradition as King David of Israel first established it as the first capital of the United Kingdom of Israel and his son King Solomon commissioned the building of the First Temple in the city. Jerusalem is also the place where JESUS was crucified which probably is the single most important event in the life of CHRIST and even though Christmas is the most celebrated Holiday, the resurrection is the basis for the entire Christian Religion. In ISLAMIC tradition Jerusalem became the first QIBLA, the focal point for MUSLIM Prayer. As a result, despite having a relatively small area, the OLD CITY is home to many sites of tremendous religious importance. In reality The HOLIEST CITY on EARTH! What other city on this Earth was been the center of such importance for thousands of years? NO OTHER CITY! Think about it, no other city has ever stayed as relevant and important and revered as JERUSALEM. I could go on and on rhapsodizing about the unbelievably important history involved here but I think you got my point.

Culturally, JERUSALEM also attracts millions of visitors each year to museums; housing one of kind treasures, archeological findings like The Dead Sea Scrolls and great art. The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra is world class, the Jerusalem Film Festival (yearly) is revered all over the world. Suffice to say that culturally JERUSALEM has as much on the ball as any major city.

One thing that many cities have but another example of total superiority is The JERUSALEM BIBLICAL ZOO! Officially the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Jerusalem I say it should be named AWESOME Long being the most popular tourist attraction in Israel, the zoo is famous for its collection of wildlife featured in the Hebrew Bible. Described as the most beautiful, relaxing places in Jerusalem, it is really an escape to the land of The Torah.

The bottom line is that JERUSALEM is an extremely special destination for almost anyone with any interest at any age. The CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE which is built on the site where Christ was crucified, resurrected and buried comes alive after the last tourist leaves every night as the Monks participate in special liturgies while they clean and prepare for the next day. To think that this church was first built by the Roman Emperor Constantine in 325 is mind-boggling to me! The fact that it was rebuilt to its current appearance after being destroyed in 1009 is a testament to JERUSALEM as well as ISRAEL on the whole. Ever changing, rebuilding, and renewing itself and most important, surviving whatever comes! Damn Impressive I would say. Even its name JERUSALEM given so many years ago and meaning \FOUNDATION of PEACE or POSSESSION of PEACE or RAIN of PEACE depending on who you speak with tells the story, the history and the future of this most storied and magical of cities.
